The Ask
Choose a brand from the mass market sector known for denim apparel, and develop a collection that heavily features denim.
The Process
One of the capstone courses in the VCU Fashion program is FASH 440, or Line Development. It is one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences a VCU fashion student can endure as it combines all of the industry knowledge we acquired over three and a half years. Akin to the Met Gala, each semester, a different theme that the project revolves around is selected; the theme during my term was “Mass Market: Aged.” As mentioned above, each team had to select a mass-market brand known for their denim, and create a line revolving around the theme, with the “Aged” part being up for interpretation. My team and I chose Lucky Brand! Moreover, the Line Development class is sponsored by Cotton Inc., one of the leading innovators in the textile industry. As a result, my team members and I had the chance to experience what it takes to create a clothing line from start to finish; between figuring out which fabric technology from Cotton Inc. best fit our consumer to crafting the marketing materials for a celebrity collaboration for our line, the lessons I learned during this course are some that I will take with me throughout my career.
