The Ask

Design different sets inspired by the coquette aesthetic and incorporate different floral elements to create an aesthetically pleasing background for an editorial photoshoot. In addition to pulling multiple ensembles together to ensure that the set design and garments complement each other and fit the given aesthetic.

The Process

  • Planning

After creativity strikes and a new idea for a photoshoot arises, planning the logistics and figuring out how to execute the idea is key. Firstly, I like to make a mood board on Pinterest detailing the inspiration and different themes I want to include. Figuring out which models are going to participate, and contacting photographers and hair and makeup artists is the crux of the planning stage. Moreover, I like to create a shot list on Pinterest of different poses that I want the model(s) to incorporate while shooting.

  • Sourcing

After confirming who will be participating, sourcing materials for each set build, and reviewing wardrobe inventory is next. Creating a spreadsheet with each item that needs to be purchased along with the price, shipping details, and any other identifying information allows for an organized sourcing process.

  • Building

Before I can begin building a set, I like to create a Pinterest board with set design inspiration. Starting from scratch with a blank wall and a pile of equipment for a backdrop can be daunting, so referencing pop culture and fashion history on Pinterest helps to spark creativity.

  • Shooting

The final step in this process is the photoshoot! Cultivating a safe and positive environment on set is essential to this stage. When bringing different creatives together, it’s important to make sure that everyone respects each other and their ideas. Being creative is vulnerable, so I like to ensure that the set is a safe space.
