The Ask
Assist with building multiple sets that are part of a 72-hour installation titled BLOOM at Called to Create Studios. Each set will have different floral elements to represent different phases of life in which you bloom. Sets must be versatile and user-friendly as photographers, models, and other creatives will be signing up for hour-long time slots to shoot with each set.

Creating a 72-hour installation takes a lot of planning to ensure everything goes smoothly for the three days that it’s available. The planning process for BLOOM began with figuring out how many sets should be built and where in the studio they should be built. With three rooms to work with, there would be plenty of natural light, but that can also cause issues. As the natural light moves from room to room throughout the day, we had to ensure that those participating would be able to shoot in the natural light with any of the sets.

After planning how many sets we would be building and where they would be built, figuring out which type of flowers could stay fresh for three days was the next challenge. We decided to source a combination of fake flowers and real flowers to ensure that the installations could withstand the 72-hour time frame. Many of our real flowers were baby’s breath because they don’t need a lot of water to thrive. For the real flowers, we sourced those the day before the installation opened to ensure peak freshness. As a result, we had to work quickly the day before to ensure each set would be completed and ready for the grand opening.

Building each set for BLOOM was a great challenge for me as I had to be delicate and cautious with the real florals we were using. I also had another challenge in the form of a flower arch going over a doorway in one of the rooms of the studio. Since we wanted a voluminous look from the flowers without purchasing too many, we used chicken wire and pool noodles to create the arch. The chicken wire caged the pool noodle in place and we were able to stick flowers in between the openings of the chicken wire.
The Outcome:
Seeing BLOOM come to life was such an amazing experience; many ideas similar to BLOOM begin as a Pinterest board or a small note on a piece of paper, so watching each of these sets come to fruition was very special. I learned so much about the composition of a good set and the importance of taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture.
